So often we are too busy to spend time just reflecting. Letting words, images, sounds, stories, responsibilities, all settle into the seabed of our minds, in order to find a clear and certain space that allows for reflection is something we should embrace for ourselves every quarter. I know from the many years I spent as a busy entrepreneur, that I rarely took a moment off, but I’ve grown in wisdom, at least I like to think so, and know reflection is integral to the health of my mind and the quality of my work.
Yesterday, I read two books! Imagine, just lying in the shade of a pine tree, soaking up the summer heat, with no thought other than to turn the page and read more of the story that lies between your hands. Last night, as I finished my second book, that was purposefully not on social media or business, a great non-fiction book that (Running With Scissors) had me laughing out loud in the hammock, I felt all my ‘to do’s’ dissolve like sugar in the bottom of a well-deserved Mojito. Slipping into sleep as woodpeckers and squirrels bustled about in the trees around me, and waking to a feeling that the day is indeed long and expansive, has restored me from a long, intensely demanding winter.
Do you take time to reflect? To sink into story and allow someone else to drive for a while? If you haven’t in ‘god knows how long’ then I urge you to take the day off, curl up with some great books, and unravel the life you are leading and let it open to receive some reflection and stillness.
